What is a Virtual Appointment

Virtual appointments will continue to be available to all Alberta residents. It is a great tool for consultations and physiotherapy advice and for those who cannot resume in-person care.

What is a virtual appointment?

A virtual appointment is a physiotherapy appointment done through a video call. It is similar to Zoom or FaceTime, however we use a safe and secure, encrypted software to deliver the session. Virtual appointments have many names: virtual physio, virtual session, telerehabilitation, virtual care, video consultation, etc. They’re all the same!

How can a virtual appointment help me?

Virtual sessions are great to address many things. A physiotherapy virtual appointment can provide:

  • advice on posture

  • complete an ergonomic workspace assessment

  • progress or provide new exercises

  • general recommendations and advice on aches, pains, injuries, etc

  • injury assessment and management

  • and much more…

Virtual sessions cannot provide any manual therapy or modality applications (i.e acupuncture)

Will my extended health care benefits cover the cost of the appointment?

Most extended health benefit plans cover virtual physiotherapy appointments. However, we advise you to please contact your insurance provider to get more details about your coverage. After your payment, we will email you a receipt that you can submit to your extended health care provider for reimbursement. Payments will be made by credit card through a secured and encrypted software.

What do I need for a virtual appointment?

A piece of ID if this is your first appointment.

Clear a space in your home for safety.

Wifi connection.

Provide the physiotherapist your location as well as an emergency contact in case of an emergency.

Provide an alternate way of communication in case the session disconnects.

How do I connect?

Once you are booked for a virtual session, you will be prompted to complete an intake and a consent form. An email will be sent to you with instructions with a link on how to connect to the session. There will also be instructions on what browser to use (depending on the device you plan to use). We advise that you follow those instructions as they allow the session to run smoothly with no freezing or disconnecting.

If you are having problems, please check your inbox for further instructions or have your phone nearby as your physiotherapist will try to contact you to help troubleshoot the problem.
